At Eonvia we know the importance of keeping access to your comaany’s data secure and yet still easily accessable to you:
Passwords need to be strong, unique and complex to provide a good level of protection for your accounts.
It is important to have a different password for every account as a data breach in one will not then affect all the other accounts you have.
Multiply the number of passwords you need for every account you use and that makes for a very good memory or the need for password management software!
A Password Manager is a software application that keeps a record of all the passwords a user will need. It involves the user creating a “master password” for the password manager app and then saving all the different accounts and logins they use into the safe encrypted area of this application. From then on you just log into this one application and as you go to open accounts, or land on saved web site accounts it will automatically fill in the required details for you.
Passwords for work logins, servers, multifactor authentication, email accounts, WiFi access, online shopping accounts, supplier web sites, online banking and data for form filling are all securely stored and easily accessible as required. Saved sites with secure passwords can be shared between people which can be useful when using a shared resource within a department or a shared bank account between individuals.
Some password manager applications allow you to store notes and some documents in the application’s secure area too.
Another advantage of a password manager is that it not only stores your passwords and fills them in as required for you but, it can also help you generate the random, long and complex ones required to make any breach of your accounts or data far more difficult.
A secure password should be a minimum of 16 digits and be in a format that is not easy to guess even if brute force password cracking software is used. The password manager can generate this password as follows:
- There will be an option to “Generate Secure Password” in the menu of the password manager application.
- Select the number of digits long you want the password to be then tick the options to include upper and lowercase letters, numbers and characters. This way the password is not a word that dictionary software can crack.
- The password manager will suggest a password, like the one shown, if you prefer a different one click on the redo button next to the password.
Most password managers come in several options, for example they can be accessed from a web site or deliver your passwords via an extension you can add to your web browser. Some you buy as part of a subscription e.g. Norton antivirus and password manager package. A large number are free but do investigate which one will work best for you, some of these can be upgraded from the free version to a business or premium version e.g. LastPass
Using password management software goes a long way to making your life easier while giving peace of mind that you are using the recommended strong, and complex passwords needed. Any of our staff can advise you on the different password manager options available.
